It is the end of a momentous year, with its changes and challenges, mysteries and misunderstandings. In many ways, 2020 slapped us right upside the head and told us to “act right!!!” We stripped down the streamers of fantasy of what we could want to be in order to see what we are in actuality. The ridiculousness of entertainment was numbed by reality and the reality shows reflected what we were experiencing in our own homes. We woke from a stupor like a drunk at a wedding, wondering what the hell happened and what did I miss?
Now with the end of the year upon us, the traditional challenge of “making a list and checking it twice” and conjuring up what kind of good we will be next year is in our hands. After the sobering reality of the party that never seems to end named 2022, what will we become in 2023? Here are some ideas to think about so that we are prepared for 2021 and beyond.
GET FIT NOW!
We have had many restrictions on us this past year and it is important that we establish some sort of movement program (notice I did not say exercise?) in order to strengthen our bodies. Walk, lift light weights at home, do your cardio on the stairs, squats in front of the news, etc. Any and all movement is good for your tendons, muscles, and blood flow. Lighting a white candle anointed with Health or Healing Oil and having it burn during your ‘movement time’ (remember it is not exercise) can assist in drawing in good things for you as you work on getting out the negative “sludge” from your pores.
Many learned how to cook with wonderful video streams, food service deliveries, and enhanced daily e-mails with creative ways to use what we had in the cabinet. Chick pea pasta with creamy Alfredo — who would have known! Staying away from junk food and eating better improves your life in many ways. Have to have chocolate? Do so in moderation and make sure it is pure blocks of that dark heaven and not stuffed with other hidden calories. Got the crunching blues? Make some popcorn or buy healthy chips to crunch away that stress. Moderation is the mantra for the day. Energize spring water by placing your hands in the shape of a triangle, with the tips of your index fingers touching and the tips of your thumbs touching. Spread your fingers as wide as you can and pray or chant in your own words an affirmation that this water will cleanse you and fill you with clarity and peace.
Now is a great time to go through your wardrobe and donate your gently used items to those less fortunate. We have helped online shopping to blow up during the last year, and we did pick up a few fabulous pieces we are going to bust out once we can party again, but until then, go through your drawers and give up items that don’t fit too well. Bless someone who can use that sweater or coat! Go further to extend the blessings by anointing the label in the center back of the garment with Fast Luck or Blessings Oil, so that it will give the new owner a spiritual boost. By blessings others, you are rewarded with blessings.
GET PERSONAL ARRANGEMENTS IN ORDER
I am talking about getting your birth certificates, Social Security cards, passports, banking information, life insurance policies, final (meaning funeral) arrangements, and estates, trusts, and wills in order. Many young unsuspecting individuals passed this last year, leaving a litigious mess for family to deal with during office and departmental COVID-19 closures. Burn an anointed Clarity candle or an Ancestor devotional candle for assistance in these legal decisions, so that you will be clear of thought and guided to secure the family future for the descendants.
MAKE A DESIGNATION BOOK FOR SPECIAL GIFTS
It is not too early to create a journal that you can keep in your personal papers that assigns certain pieces of jewelry, firearms, antiques, photos, and other material items to chosen members of friends and family. Did little Kiana love your gold hoops? Put it in writing that she is to receive these upon your passing. Grandma’s china? Give it to your baby sister. Dad’s music library you inherited? Let your brother have it for memories. Anoint the book spine or the edges of the paper with Peace Oil so that calm emotions and sensibility rules over those who will look at this notebook when you have passed.
PROMISE YOURSELF, NOT OTHERS
For those of you who have flown on an airplane, right before takeoff, the cabin attendants demonstrate how to put on the oxygen mask. They tell you to put your mask on first, before assisting others. Why? Because if you pass out, you can’t assist another. Charity begins at home and you have to come before others. Please consider being selective with who you promise your time, energy, or money to in the future. You will not ever be able to save everyone on the face of the Earth, so consider starting with yourself. Once you have all your needs fulfilled, then choose one or two persons or charities to help. There are plenty of other humans to shoulder the weight of the World. Empower yourself with a pink candle anointed with an Attraction or Self Love Oil so that you can see the benefits of taking care of yourself first, before extending service to others. This will protect you from being taken advantage of by others. You might also want to light a white candle asking blessings for any charity or individual who needs additional prayer at this time. Anoint this candle with Blessing or Healing Oil.
The upcoming 2021 year will still host challenges that we will face as we move forward in this moment in Time where we are a part of History. None of this is a true mystery, as events have been predestined for us. Working together with the Future allows you control of your own Destiny. Consider some of the above actions to enhance your Life and Existence.
We know it won’t be the easiest of holidays. Covid has stretched us all thin emotionally. Some experience boredom leading to drama, others free-floating anxiety on a low burn. Too much togetherness or not enough togetherness — love suffers either way. Insomnia and nightmares are commonplace, and being alone with heartache at this time of year has always been especially difficult.
So here’s an Emergency Support Kit, with self-care and remedies to help survive until next year.
For Sweetening the home, fill an airtight container with extra-fine baker’s sugar, plus 2 large vanilla beans. Recite Psalms 23 over your sugar or tape it to the jar.
HEAL MY HEART TEA
Combine lemon zest, shredded ginger, hyssop flowers, lavender buds, and peppermint in boiling water. Recite Psalms 51 over the brew and enjoy sweetened with honey.
TO RENEW AFFECTION
Add pumpkin pie spice and ground cardamom to hot cocoa — or just enjoy the aroma in simmering water on the stove!
SWEET DREAMS SACHET
For lucky and peaceful dreams, fill a muslin bag with lavender, calendula flowers, and hops. Read Psalms 4 before bedtime.
GUARDIAN ANGELS SPELL
Place a clean china plate atop a namepaper listing the residents of your home. Dress a blue or white cross candle with Peaceful Home Oil and place it in the center of the plate. Around it, put two protective circles of herbs: first lavender, hyssop, and mint, then rosemary, basil, and rue. Place four purple or red helper candles, dressed with Fiery Wall of Protection Oil, as guardians around the plate. Light as a centerpiece, taking care to stay safe.
May your days and nights be filled with gentleness until the new year!
As we approach the holidays, many people are struggling with the decision, due to the upsurge of the Covid-19 pandemic, of whether to be involved in family gatherings. How do we handle this? Although family time SHOULD be year around, most people use the holidays to take time off from busy schedules and spend it with loved ones and friends. This year is slightly different and that is putting it mildly. Covid- 19 is worse now than it was when it first started. As the government struggles to get this nerve-wrecking situation under control, we must use wisdom in all that we do. Don’t take your situation for granted. Protect your family by sticking to the program of safety first. Faith in the Lord is not a warrant to ignore common sense. Unfortunately, we do not know what our loved ones have picked up in other environments or what we may pick up and bring into their environment. We must understand and take into consideration the health and wellbeing of our family and household. Social distancing is of great importance. This is the time to take full advantage of the wonders that modern technology provides us, such as Zoom, Skype, Facetime, Video Chat, and other means of communication. This will allow everyone to be included in the holiday festivities, no matter where they are. We can not stress enough the importance of safety. This is the time to be selfless and understanding.
Another thing to think about is steering clear of family foolishness. We have to embrace and love one another. Couples need to stick and stay together. Be an example to your children of how to maintain a healthy relationship. Love and hold your kids close. Children, both grown and young, remember to love and respect your parents and your siblings because time waits for no one. Instead of fussing and fighting and separating, why not put that same bull-headed energy into staying together and fighting for better communication. Fight to keep outside negative energy away from your domain. Fight for positive growth. Together you stand. Divided you fall. The world is going through a hellish period and we never know what the next day, hour or minute will bring. Stay humble and appreciate one another — and remember that there is always someone in a worse position than you.
I want to introduce to you a simple but effective method of maintaining the family bond no matter how far away your love ones are. This Full Moon ritual is to promote Love, Protection, Good Health and Unity. Always remember, a family that Prays together Stays together. No matter where they are, they will have the teachings of the ancestors instilled in their minds and in their hearts. This is the light which will always help them find their way home.

Who couldn’t use a little extra love and money these days? With the holidays right around the corner, I thought I’d share a recipe for a sweet, magical treat that will bless your friends and family with money, love, blessings, and protection. Since Thanksgiving for many represents community and cohesion, this recipe can be adjusted for our vegetarian and vegan loved ones to enjoy as well!
Pumpkin Spice Sugar Hearts
Yields about 20 cookies.
You Will Need:
1/2 cup butter (If you are vegan, substitute with applesauce, almond butter, or coconut oil)
Heart-shaped cookie cutter
1 cup white sugar separated into 1/2 cups
1/4 cup brown sugar
1 tsp vanilla extract
1/4 cup pumpkin puree
1 1/2 all-purpose flour (sub up to 1/3 whole-wheat pastry)
1/2 tbsp arrowroot powder (for thickening/binding)
1 tsp baking powder
1/2 tsp baking soda
1/4 tsp salt
1 tsp pumpkin pie spice
1/2 tsp anise seed
3/4 tsp ground cinnamon
1 tbsp unsweetened almond or oat milk
Start by bringing the butter or applesauce to room temperature in a large mixing bowl. Mix for about a minute with a hand mixer. Pray over the brown sugar, white sugar (1/2 cup) and vanilla that all who eat these cookies find sweetness and love in their homes and hearts. Mix these into the butter or sauce along with some pumpkin puree which draws in money. Mix until smooth and set aside.
Using a saucepan, heat some of the Anise seeds in the almond or oat milk on a low heat for about three minutes. Anise lends protection to keep your loved ones safe. Try not to scald the milk or let it boil over. Once the time is up, take it off the heat, strain out the seeds and set aside.
Using a sifter, sift your arrowroot powder (attracts good luck), salt (protective), cinnamon (brings luck in money and love), flour, baking powder and baking soda into the bowl with the butter. Use your mixing spoon to stir the strained milk into the batter mix. As you do this, stir clockwise praying as you go. You may pray Psalm 23 while you do this as it said to “cover all conditions.”
Once everything is mixed into a soft dough, cover bowl with cling wrap and set in fridge for 30 minutes. While dough rests, set oven to 375 and preheat for 30 minutes. Form ping-pong sized dough balls on parchment lined or greased baking tray. If using a cookie cutter, use a glass bottom to press dough in circles before cutting out. Mix the remaining half cup of sugar with Pumpkin Spice mix, to attract money, and dust each heart. Leave room between cookies so they don’t smoosh.
Bake your hearts for 10-12 minutes or until golden brown. Once cooled, these can be further frosted (should you choose), or wrapped in a decorative box and sent to your loved ones! They may also be kept in the freezer for up to a month, should you want more for your next holiday.
Good Luck & Happy Baking!
The World is an ever-changing place, and with that change comes new technology that allows us to communicate throughout the world. In the days of long ago, people did not travel very far from their ancestral or birth land, but as we search for our own lifestyle and climate, families and friends are distanced by miles now more than ever. Given also that we are in the midst of a pandemic where we cannot socialize and visit as we once did, a lot of us are now relying on psychic services given through the telephone or via webcam. Many have asked me whether a telephone tarot reading can deliver the honest truth as effectively as if the Querent (client or customer) is present — and the answer is most certainly YES! Here are some reasons that a distance reading is perfect for those searching for spiritual advice.
One of the first benefits that distance readings bring is in the management of Time. There are only so many hours in a day, and with the pressures of career, family, and just day-to-day living and chores, you need someone who is flexible to meet with you on your schedule, or meet at a time that is equally agreeable for both your lifestyles. Once you have booked out a portion of time to yourself, you can sit in quiet and focus on your questions without pets needing attention or hungry family members needing a meal. When you have made your arrangements with childcare or career meetings, you can sit with your journal and either speak with a reader over the phone or via video chat to aid you in your quest for answers through divination.
When a client comes into a storefront, home, or office of a spiritual practitioner, the surroundings may be unfamiliar and distracting, and thus not allow the Querent (you) a comfortable space to open up to the reader. Decor or ambiance may make you nervous, but if you were to receive your reading in the comfort of your home, your focus will be enhanced by ease and familiarity, so that you can hear all the information being given to you. In addition, the reader has no preconceived notion or bias upon meeting you in person, as some clients may dress or behave in a unique way that may “front load” the reader with information that may impact the reading. A phone consultation can give the reader a “blank slate” in which to work, resulting in a more precise reading without preconceptions.
From time to time, we readers encounter clients of various degrees of popularity, such as pop singers, internet influencers, or others who are recognizable in various walks of life. The famous or nearly famous are seeking spiritual guidance just like you, and they may worry about issues with security and blackmail. When a caller uses phone psychic services, they can use any name they want, and “Mary” will never be revealed since personal information, such as credit cards, are kept a secret. If receiving a reading through video chat, they can simply leave the camera off and use the microphone services only. The client is afforded privacy and security that they may not receive with an in-person consultation.
The ultimate goal is to reduce nervousness to the client. Better focus and concentration with the reading, and the ability to relax and really connect with a psychic, results in an informative and helpful spiritual consultation that will aid and assist the Querent (you) in gaining success in all matters of your life. Sitting down with a favorite beverage, lighting a scented candle or incense, wearing comfortable clothes, and being able to decompress the stresses of the day before your telephone reading results in a great session. Your psychic or tarot reader is your companion to assist you in formulating a brighter and more positive future. Book your appointment today with your favorite reader and plan to receive a great consultation session with a professional experienced in their system of divination to help you.
As many of us aim to get a firm grasp on things, it’s vital to remember the importance of creating spiritual foundations alongside our physical ones. This is where good conjure can assist greatly, especially when working with roots. Roots are thought of as quite powerful plant allies in Hoodoo; after all you couldn’t have rootwork without ’em! Not only do they pack quite a punch, they can help when needing to change things “from the ground up.” Below are seven well-known roots used in Hoodoo that can lend a big hand in manifesting the life you desire.
1. Lovage Root
When looking for new love, look no further than Lovage. This root can help in not just attracting new partners, but can improve your chances at finding them. This root works well when combined with other ingredients, making it ideal for mojo bags. If the interest of a specific target is what you seek, add their personal concerns to the bag.
2. Galangal Root (Little John)
An excellent root for legal situations, Galangal (colloquially known as Little John to Chew) finds its fame primarily in the court house. Many old-school tricks with Little John to Chew include chewing and spitting the root on the courtroom floor to influence favor and mercy from the judge. However, it can also be used to break or send away a jinx. This is also done through the act of chewing and spitting out the root.
3. Sampson Snake Root
A powerful ally associated with male energy, Sampson Snake Root conveys confidence, strength and power. It’s no wonder why this root is often turned to for uncrossing and restoring one’s power. Because of Sampson Snake root’s masculine nature, it is often used in love spells by people of similar energies to attract feminine mates.
4. Queen Elizabeth Root
Just as opposites attract, we have the counterpart to our previous root — the regal Queen Elizabeth. Described by Miss Cat as being “superior to any other love fetish or amulet,” any practitioner searching for romance should not be without it! Queen Elizabeth works exclusively to draw the love of men. This root is often carried whole as a pocket piece or in a mojo bag to draw masculine lovers.
5. Lucky Hand Root
Gamblers rejoice! This root is just for you and “does what it says”! Lucky Hand root is rare and precious, much like a winning hand. Anyone looking to increase their luck should carry one in their wallet and have one on their money altar. A good trick I recommend to keep winning luck coming in involves wrapping a Lucky Hand root up in a five dollar bill with Irish Moss & Cinnamon. Dress it weekly with Hoyt’s cologne and keep it in your wallet.
6. Solomon’s Seal Root
Considered to be a root of Wisdom, Solomon’s Seal is helpful in matters where clarity and insight is lacking. This root not only serves to illuminate that which is hidden, but can also help to uncross when affected by particularly troublesome jinxes. Solomon’s Seal root is also protective and can be placed around the home to ward off intrusion.
7. High John the Conqueror
Hands down the most famous root in Hoodoo, High John the Conqueror can assist with just about anything. Many conjurers love High John to open roads, remove blockages, and attract employment and love. With this in mind, a nicely sized High John the Conqueror root can be an invaluable ally when needing to start afresh or to simply keep blessings intact. I recommend dressing one weekly with a condition oil of your choice or my favorite, Special Oil #20.
Many of these roots can become the base for powerful mojo hands, serve as pocket or altar pieces, or be added to candles and baths. It’s always a good idea to spend time with the root of your choosing before working it, to better understand its spirit. If you want to know more about working with these wonderful roots, pick up a copy of miss cat’s Hoodoo Herb and Root Magic.
Wishing you good luck and solid foundations!
A house beset by noises, knocks, and cold spaces. A light, orb, or presence just beyond peripheral vision. A room where no one can manage a good night’s sleep. A door that refuses to stay shut.
We’ve all been there — in a space that feels wrong or off somehow. Here are some tips to get rid of that evil mess!
1. A glass of Holy Water with a square of camphor can be placed in any room without pets or children. Evil energies flee from this combination.
2. To soothe your dreams, fill a small muslin bag with flowers of hops, lavender, and jasmine. Sleep with this under your pillow.
3. Use Chinese Wash in your mop water and cleanse the house from top to bottom and back to front. Throw the last of the water out the front door or into the street.
4. Open all windows and smudge your space. Try a mix of Sage and Eucalyptus or Pine and Camphor on self-lighting charcoal. Tibetan Ghost Purging Incense is a powerful option.
5. From the spirit houses of Southeast Asia to the wooden Nkisi of the Congo, spirit dwellings can give a peaceful retreat to entities which have not yet moved on.
6. Wash linens and drapes, adding Banishing, Uncrossing, or Run Devil Run bath crystals to the washing machine. Anil bluing balls are another good addition.
7. Lastly, in a room that just won’t quiet down, place a white saucer in each corner. On each saucer, in a ring of salt, place one slice of white onion and one slice of lemon, praying Psalms 23. Replace weekly to remove negativity, which can even blacken the materials!
This ritual to gain the advice of an ancestor is always potent — but Halloween’s full moon makes this the perfect weekend to reach out to the spirit world. The working is discussed in detail on the Lucky Mojo Hoodoo Podcast from November 11, 2018.
You can perform this rite on an ancestral altar or any other space dedicated for such work. Kitchens and family rooms work well…bedrooms not so much, for the simple reason that you don’t want to expose your ancestors to private and intimate acts. But we work with what we got, so if your living quarters are a single room, do what you gotta do.
For the work you will need:
1. A new, small picture frame with a picture of the ancestor you’re calling upon. If you have no picture, write their name on a piece of white paper, and put it in the frame. If you don’t know a name, write “My Head Ancestor.”
2. A small glass of cold water
3. Self lighting incense charcoal
4. A heat proof container to burn incense
5. Herbs and Curios:
6. Personal Concerns
A few hairs from your head or body, or a few nail clippings will work too. However, if there are genealogical or genetic concerns (perhaps you’ve been adopted into a family, and want to connect to the line you’ve been adopted into and not your, own genetic ancestors) use Quassia chips or shavings instead.
Mix together and crush Anise, Wormwood, Tobacco, Mugwort, Mint, Acacia, and Gum Arabic first, and put to the side.
Separately, combine some Sandalwood with your personal concerns or Quassia.
Set the picture frame, the glass of cold water, and the incense burner in a triangular shape — with the frame being the back tip of the triangle.
Get into your spiritual zone. Breathe deeply. Meditate. Pray. Do that which helps you to shift the atmosphere from mundane to spiritual, so you can perform the work ahead.
Now, that you are in the proper head space, take your shoes off and declare the space a holy space. This can be done in any way that is appropriate to your spiritual tradition, like sprinkling holy water, or calling on the quarters, or invoking the archangels. There’s no one right way to do this. Do what resonates with you.
Next, carefully light the charcoal and let the little sparks run across the whole disk, so it’s ready for your incense.
Add a pinch of the herb mix, letting the smoke rise and consecrate the space.
When you feel it is time, take a pinch of sandalwood mixed with your personal concerns, and say in a commanding manner:
“As The Lord spoke to Moses from the Burning Bush,
So I rightfully petition you, [say ancestor’s name],
my ancestor, to speak to me and guide me!”
Close your eyes, take a few deep breaths into the belly, and allow the energy to permeate your consciousness. There’s a good chance you’ll feel a presence, or if you are psychically inclined, even receive a message.
Essentially, you could stop the ritual now, or keep adding incense as you speak to your ancestor, asking them about a specific matter you’re seeking guidance about.
When you are ready to finish the work, thank your ancestor and any other Spirits who might have been in assistance, and close the spiritual space — again, per your personal spiritual tradition or occult path.
This working can be done at times of need for ancestral intervention or guidance, or on a regular schedule if you chose to deepen your connection with your ancestors. If you have some leftover incense mix, you might want to keep it for next time you’ll be performing this rite.
May your workings be blessed and your ancestors talkative, whether you acknowledge Halloween, Samhain, All Saints’ Day, or Dia de los Muertos.

This ground-breaking work was originally sold via ads in Black-owned newspapers, and it opened up a nation-wide conversation on the increasing importance of conjure work with candles. The author was a participant-observer and documentarian who respectfully verified the sources of his information from workers in the African-American Spiritual Church Movement, to compile a complete manual of home and church altar candle services for use in churches and by home practitioners. This famous hoodoo grimoire contains more than 50 candle and lamp spells for protection, love, wealth, and luck. Now, with 32 additional illustrated pages by editor catherine yronwode, The Guiding Light is back in print, bigger and better than ever.
Apple cider warmed and spiced, gathering together to share in the final harvest of the year before winter. These are moments that represent the fall equinox, a moment of equal light/day and dark/night. Nature begins to rest and darkness sets in as night grows longer.
This is the second harvest after Lammas (or Lughnasadh), the gathering of apples for cider and grapes for wine, gourds, squash, corn, and seeds for the spring. The central theme of this time is the sharing of the bounty of the harvest. This is the pagan Thanksgiving, a time of gifts and blessings.
One of the symbols of this time is the Apple. If cut in half the seeds in the center form a pattern: a five pointed star in a circle. The apple tree is viewed as the Tree of Life. As apples fall to the ground, the descent to the Underworld begins and declining life occurs. The journey to the womb of the mother goddess takes place in preparation for a rebirth, when apples blossom once more at the spring equinox.
A time of introspection begins: what to harvest on social and emotional levels, and what to let go. This is also a time to recharge magical energies and draw new currents of elemental powers to work with in your life.
Take the root of yellow dock dried and ground to powder, steep in boiling water and drain. Take the tea and anoint doors of home and work areas to bring good luck and good fortune.
Use ground and powdered Angelica root as incense to ward off evil and protect your home, workplace, and other areas.
Burn a 4-in yellow or gold candle, anointed with Master oil and rolled in crushed master root powder. (A white candle may also be used)
Harmony and balance (earth)
Acquire a hematite stone or a piece of jewelry with hematite in it. Anoint it with blessing oil, blow upon it, sprinkle water on it, and place in a bowl of salt for a few hours. Carry upon your person.
These four workings can be done separately or you can create a fall altar with a russet or orange cloth. Arrange the yellow dock tea, powdered angelic root incense, candle, and amulet in the four quarters of air, fire, water, and earth, with gourds, corn, apples, and grapes in the center.
Light the sense and the candle and speak your gratitude for the gathered harvest of gifts and teachings acquired during the year. Sit in quiet and send your gratitude out while reflecting on your personal harvest.
